The Ancient Water Tunnels of Kasaragod
Suranga is a traditional water harvesting system unique to the Kasaragod district of Kerala, India. These horizontal tunnels, dug into laterite hills, tap into groundwater and provide a sustainable source of water for irrigation and daily use. This ancient technique, passed down through generations, is a testament to the ingenuity of local farmers.
Farmers dig narrow, horizontal tunnels into the hillside until they reach the water table. The porous laterite rock allows water to seep into the tunnel, which is then channeled to fields or stored in ponds. This gravity-based system requires no external energy, making it both eco-friendly and cost-effective.
